WASHINGTON – The National Domestic Workers Alliance released the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s third State of the Union Address:
“In last night’s State of the Union Address, President Biden emphasized the importance of investing in caring for families, urging us to imagine a future with affordable, quality child care, paid family and medical leave, and aging and disability care, including a care workforce that earns family-sustaining wages. As the President noted in his address, this is the future we know we deserve – one where workers are valued and care is supported, affordable, and accessible.
We know that care work is the work upon which all other work depends; it is at the heart of a healthy economy and society. But families are buckling under the cost of care, having to make impossible choices on their own, between work and caring for their loved ones. While care workers – overwhelmingly women and disproportionately women of color – are not paid enough to support themselves and their own families. These are major economic concerns, for families and for the nation as a whole. Any elected leader who is paying attention to voters should see that.
At the National Domestic Workers Alliance, we remain committed to improving the lives of domestic and care workers and organizing for the dignity, respect, and fairness they deserve. President Biden’s address reaffirms the value of care and care work within the national conversation, and this administration’s commitment to progress on these issues. We continue to call for comprehensive action on the part of Congress, to invest in our care infrastructure once and for all.”
