NEW YORK – “On this Labor Day, the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) carries forward a proud tradition of organizing for stronger protections, equitable wages, and safer workplaces. We – the nannies, house cleaners, and home care workers whose critical roles make all other work possible – are organizing in cities, states and across the nation for rights, respect and recognition.
In California, domestic workers are organizing to end the exclusion of domestic workers from California workplace health and safety protections. In Philadelphia, domestic workers are organizing to implement hard-won paid time off protections. In New Jersey, domestic workers are organizing to pass a statewide Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, to become the 11th state in the nation to pass state level legislation to protect the rights of domestic workers.
The imminent reintroduction of the Federal Domestic Worker Bill of Rights represents the determination of domestic workers across the country to achieve fairness and dignity. Labor Day reminds us of the power of women workers’ organizing – from the washerwomen who went on strike in Atlanta, Georgia in 1881, to cleaners and caregivers who marched in Sacramento this week. Domestic workers will continue to unite until our economy supports the workers who make all other work possible.”
