NEW YORK – The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling is yet another example of the injustices and cruelty our immigrant communities face in a country where they belong. While the decision doesn’t change the renewal process for current DACA recipients, it sends a clear message about the devaluation of the humanity of our immigrant youth and the constant uncertainty they and their families face at the hands of leaders who use them as a political bargaining chip.
Communities won DACA through relentless organizing while we continued fighting for permanent protections, including a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented people, to fulfill the values and ideals this country professes to uphold. Congress must act before the end of this year to keep families together and live up to those values, and to lift the youth, students, families, and essential workers who contribute to our society and economy because it’s the only home they have ever known.
As an organization that supports and fights alongside domestic workers for dignity and respect in the workplace – many of whom are immigrant women of color, Dreamers, and workers whose children are Dreamers – we are calling on Congress and the Biden administration to swiftly pass permanent protections to end this ongoing nightmare for undocumented immigrants in our country. No one should be forced to live in a constant state of terror over deportation or detention – and no one’s worth should be questioned by the status of a program from one court case to another.
DACA was proof that we can win big to protect our families and communities when we fight, and we will continue to work toward a future where millions of undocumented people who call this country home can live with the dignity and respect they deserve.
