NDWA Gig Worker Advocates and Handy have announced a first-of-its-kind pilot program to advance workers’ interests on the platform. The NDWA Gig Workers Advocate is an organization launched by the domestic workers movement to improve the quality of jobs for gig economy workers. Handy is an online marketplace for home cleaning, installation, and other home services, and the biggest online cleaning dispatcher.

The pilot program allows Handy Pros — workers who use the Handy app to book jobs — to earn benefits and an increase in pay to at least $15 an hour in Pro Pay, as well as the opportunity to provide input aimed at enhancing the platform experience. The agreement is the first-of-its kind between an advocacy organization for gig workers and a gig economy company. It comes at a critical time for domestic workers, who have been some of the first and hardest hit by the pandemic, as their work takes place inside others’ homes.

The pilot program will extend to Handy Pros in the states of Florida, Kentucky, and Indiana who book cleaning jobs on the Handy platform.
