On December 14th, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors unanimously passed legislation providing the city’s 10,000 domestic workers with paid sick leave. The “Domestic Workers’ Equal Access to Paid Sick Leave” ordinance establishes a “portable” paid sick leave benefit that allows people who work for multiple households to earn and consolidate benefits from several employers and access that paid leave as they move between jobs. Introduced by District 9 Supervisor Hillary Ronen and drafted with support from the California Domestic Workers Coalition (whose members are NDWA affiliates), the ordinance is meant to help employers meet their legal mandate to provide at least one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours of work through a smartphone-based app slated to be released in late 2022 or early 2023.
